WASHINGTON _ Rep. Bob Goodlatte's son on Monday criticized the firing of former FBI counterintelligence official Peter Strzok and blamed his father's "political grandstanding."
Bobby Goodlatte tweeted that Strzok was "a patriot" and called the committee hearing for Strzok that his father chaired last month a "low point" for Congress.
Last month, Goodlatte as chairman of the House Judiciary Committee led a joint hearing with the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee about texts Strzok shared with his mistress Lisa Page, an FBI lawyer at the time, critical of then-candidate Donald Trump.
"I'm deeply embarrassed that Peter Strzok's career was ruined by my father's political grandstanding," Bobby Goodlatte tweeted.
The Republican congressman announced in November that he would retire at the end of his 13th term in January 2019.
On Sunday, the younger Goodlatte tweeted he was donating the maximum amount legally allowed to Jennifer Lewis, the Democrat running for the Virginia 6th District seat his father is vacating.
