My love of the Guardian Weekly is already three generations old. My grandfather gave my mother a subscription when she went off to university (or maybe it was an aspidistra). She, in turn, gave my sister and me a subscription when we did.
I remember the first time I really read the GW: one day over the summer holidays when I was 11, I read that week’s issue cover-to-cover (even the sport pages!) and have ever since. It opened my young eyes to many far-off places and world events.
Back then our copies were well-read – we would gather up editions left around the house and post them to our grandfather. And after reading them, he would then post them, now quite out-of-date, to an elderly artist friend.
On moving to Germany, my husband, now also a convert, promised me a subscription, and I look forward each week to its Saturday morning arrival.
The Guardian Weekly not only provides independent, insightful and balanced news and commentary from across and about the globe (particularly on climate change), but creates a wondrous and disparate community of writers, editors and readers.
Thank you, Guardian Weekly, and I hope I can one day pass on a subscription to generation number four.
