Good to meet you… Susie Chan

Good to meet you… Susie Chan

I’m a 40-year-old, married mother of one. I was born in Surrey to a Hong Kong Chinese father and a British mother. Both parents worked for the NHS as nurses. I spent my childhood in the company of fellow NHS families in nursing houses for Brookwood Hospital, a large mental hospital which has now closed down. It was an eclectic multicultural upbringing and there was a big sense of community.

I started reading the Guardian in my first job, at the British Museum. It’s a very popular paper in the museum and heritage sector. Afterwards I went to work at the Hayward Gallery. I now work at University College London as an exhibitions manager. My job has taken me to some exciting places, creating exhibitions across the globe and I’ve been lucky enough to work with some outstanding museum collections and objects. Now I’m much more based in London. I commute every day from Farnham. The journey is where I usually get the chance to catch up on the news.

These days all my spare time is taken up by my hobby – endurance running. My favourite races are “multistage ultras”. These are races that span several days, with each day being longer than a marathon. I have run races from one mile to 100 miles non-stop. Now I travel and see places when my husband and I are racing – he too shares the same hobby.

So I particular enjoy the Guardian’s running blog. I now follow Guardian culture and the main Guardian feeds on Twitter and subscribe to the app. I get all my news as it happens via my phone – it’s a great service. This has kept me faithful to reading the Guardian.
