I'm 25 and I live in Nottingham. I work for Sustrans, which promotes active transport in communities. My role involves going into colleges to raise awareness of the benefits of cycling and walking and encourage young people to make small changes to their lives to help improve the environment.
I'm also involved with a number of different voluntary organisations, including Frack Free Nottinghamshire – a cause I feel very strongly about. I'm constantly shocked at how the government pays such little attention to the issue of fracking despite its huge consequences. I also am a big supporter of growing my own food and supporting local food movements as well.
The Guardian is one of the few national newspapers that reports on fracking. But I think it needs to cover the issue more as a mainstream story and not just an environmental one. As we have learnt from countries like the US, fracking has huge effects on people and the economy. I also think the current scale of grassroots networks forming around Britain is massively underreported and it would be great if they could have more of a voice. The Guardian is great for talking about the importance of active transport – something I appreciate. My friends used to enjoy the weekly cycling blog and are upset it no longer runs.
