Good to meet you ... Ray Parkin

I have been a Guardian Weekly reader for the last 39 years.

I emigrated to Australia in 1979 and at the time I was deputy general manager of Shirebrook Colliery in the UK. I was appointed mine manager at a mine in Collie, Western Australia, and you can imagine world news was very limited, and the Guardian Weekly was my main source of excellent journalism and world news. At that time, journalism in Australia left a lot to be desired, and the Guardian Weekly represented three of the best newspapers in the world: the Guardian, Le Monde and the Washington Post.

I used to boast to my colleagues that I read the best newspapers in the world by reading the Guardian Weekly.

Nelson Mandela said that the Guardian newspaper was the window on his world and it certainly is mine. It is such a source of interesting articles; one of the amazing aspect about it, is the ability to be able to pick an old edition and still find something interesting to read.

I read the paper from front to back. It is by far the best journalism and the breadth of analysis is unsurpassed. I also enjoy the cultural articles and I always enjoy the hard Sudoku. I find it hard to part with, but I try to pass it on to my friends and colleagues.
