I first began reading the Guardian Weekly as a high school student in 2011; my father, being a Brit living in the US, began our subscription. I would raid the pile left behind in the kitchen as being declared “read”, and the news became the topics of our morning breakfast and long car rides to soccer games. Soon, it was time for me to go to college and I lamented the loss of this tradition.
However, my incredibly nurturing mother sent me care packages while away at school, in which I found copies of GW. Now, I am spending four months as a student in South Korea and my parents are still tucking issues into my care packages. I thank my parents for nourishing my body and my mind; homemade doughnuts and the GW complement each other so well.
I particularly enjoy the Notes & Queries section, as well as the World roundup, both very brief, delivering wit and news succinctly. Even if you only have a moment to spare, these columns are sure to entertain and inform.
So, what was material for breakfast-time banter has influenced me and opened my mind to the world. The paper has broadened my hopes of using my career as a scientist to attack global health problems, by connecting me to worldly issues. So, thank you Guardian for connecting me to the world and my family. I am now a dedicated reader and looking forward to many more years with the Guardian Weekly.
