Good to meet you ... Oliver Flynn

I feel like one of the students in my year 7 class – I don’t know where to begin or how to start!

I have been reading the Guardian Weekly for almost four years. Where I come from in Australia, the news on television largely concerns animals and their latest escapades: crocodiles, sharks, kangaroos and the occasional bird doing something cheeky. The Guardian Weekly supplements this well by actually providing me with a glance, although in parts in-depth, at the entire world’s news.

As a teacher I regularly share stories from the Weekly in class and I find they are unbelievably useful in engaging the attention of the 11- and 12-year-olds I work with. The articles often result in questions and critical thought: everything I aim for as an English teacher.

Aside from this, I share the crossword with my Dad each week. This actually means that we ferociously compete. I try to throw him off by putting in an incorrect word and handing it over, claiming that it’s finished. But not once have I got away with this.

The Archive section is brilliant and the Weekly review is often fantastic (I shared the Hillsborough article with as many people as I could).

Thank you, Guardian Weekly, for doing part of my job, helping me bond with my father and providing me with accurate, detailed and comprehensive news.
