Good to meet you… Lorna Kellett

Good to meet you… Lorna Kellett

I was born and raised in Preston, and moved to Manchester five years ago for university. I’m now 23 and working in tech PR. When I’m not there, I’m normally reading history books, exploring old buildings, or decorating cakes, which is a fun hobby until it’s 5am on someone’s birthday and you still haven’t finished a 3D Minion cake due to oven problems! I first started reading the Guardian when I was 16 and studying media and English at college. I used it as a style guide for my coursework, and once submitted a piece about Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein in the style of Charlie Brooker’s Screen Burn articles. I genuinely thought I was hilarious at the time.

I tend to read the Guardian online these days and follow my favourite writers on Twitter. I’m definitely guilty of letting myself get addicted to the live update feeds – I like to know what is happening as it takes place. There has been so much important news lately that it’s much easier to digest in bullets rather than waiting until the end of the day and trying to get through it all.

I work at a PR agency, where we do a lot of campaigns in education, technology and financial inclusion, and the Guardian is the best source for a lot of these social issues. As a young professional woman, I think that the Guardian represents my interests and viewpoints more than most news outlets. It’s refreshing to not feel patronised by the “lazy, entitled millennial” stereotype. Following the EU referendum, the Guardian kept me sane and really made me feel better about the lack of control and fear for the future that I suddenly felt. I always enjoy reading Opinion on the website because I like to see different viewpoints being put forward. The sentimental side of me loves reading “A letter to…” I’ve been known to get teary over them in the past – something about people anonymously baring their souls to the world really gets to me.
