Good to meet you ... Lorna Kaino

Good to meet you … Lorna Kaino

In the town south of Perth, Western Australia, where I taught at the local university, the Guardian Weekly was not delivered until Monday. So I would buy it at the newsagent on Saturday, then spend the rest of the day reading. Sometimes it did not arrive, and my weekend was ruined.

Since retiring and moving to Fremantle I have the luxury of deliveries every Friday. Along with other Australian readers, I find it a welcome reprieve from the conservative Australian press.

I always read the first page last. I start with the section on culture then proceed to international news and commentary, which I enjoy for its scope of critical observation. Of course articles concerning Australia garner my immediate attention. I am impressed and amused at how they manage to nail the nub of the story with such brevity.

I am always intrigued to read the Good to Meet You column. I wonder how many other Guardian Weekly readers share my desire to have real conversations with real people.

Wouldn’t it be good, for instance, to discuss ideas with a community of Guardian Weekly readers?

To this end I have instigated a face-to-face Good to Meet You gathering at my wonderful local community centre – Glyde-In, in East Fremantle. If you live in Western Australia, you are welcome to join our inaugural gathering at Glyde-In on 14 March.
