After graduating from Bristol University with a degree in Spanish and Portuguese, I am taking time to work as a temp and volunteer so as to decide how to make the difference I want to make in this world. I’m from Winchester although I have lived all over the place. Rio de Janeiro is my favourite city in the world and I would live there again tomorrow if I could. My dream is to travel the whole of South and Central America.
I’ve done a lot so far in my 25 years, from volunteering in the largest favela in Brazil during the process of pacification, to caring for some of Nairobi’s most wonderful children in an orphanage for those with HIV and Aids. I want to spend the next 25 years helping anyone I can, but I am particularly impassioned by women’s rights, human rights and equality. When not geeking up on these topics, I love to bake, and on the other end of the spectrum, I am halfway to my black belt in kickboxing.
I was originally forced into taking this time off after a particularly difficult year, and it was during this time that I began reading the Guardian. I love the opinion pieces, adore the travel pullout, and must admit I always check the blind date updates. However, it was the women’s section that got me hooked. Everything I read keeps me open-minded and allows me to expand my horizons. My favourite article recently is “How Argentina rose up against the murder of women” because it compresses so many of my passions into one piece. I follow the Guardian on Twitter and have the app on my phone so I can get my quick fix when I am on the go.
I’m off to Israel next week on my next adventure, so I’ll always have the Guardian close by. I see myself as a Guardian reader for life now, or until the point that it no longer broadens my mind, but I don’t see that happening any time soon.
