I started subscribing to the Guardian Weekly three years ago, after I moved from Australia to eastern Quebec and discovered that the nearest English-language newspaper was an hour’s drive away. I have always loved the experience of curling up in a chair with the hard-copy format, and the opportunity for reflection this provides. While wondering how I could resolve my paperless situation, I remembered two librarian friends saying good things about the Guardian years earlier. I started my subscription.
The paper’s arrival always brings a small burst of joy to the day. Favourite sections include Weekly Review, Comment & Debate, Books, and Culture. I admire the quality of the writing, and enjoy discovering interesting and unusual stories. I find Nature watch deeply moving, and the wonderful photos in Eyewitnessed always connect me to different lives and places. I am also a fan of Oliver Burkeman’s column.
The paper lives on after I’ve finished it. First, it makes its way to an elderly friend who likes discussing the articles when we meet. Then, he puts it in the book corner in my partner’s small cafe where it is discovered by visiting British and American tourists. I enjoy seeing their pleasure as they take a copy to their table to read.
Thank you, Guardian Weekly, for bringing a small burst of joy to all our lives.
