I have been a Guardian Weekly subscriber for nearly 20 years and unlike most readers, it appears, I have never lived outside the UK. I first became aware of the GW when a student walked into my office carrying one (thank you Olivia if you happen to be reading this!). As I was struggling to find time to read a daily paper, the GW seemed ideal and I have been a devoted fan ever since. Up until that point I had been a regular and then occasional reader of the Guardian.
As a keen tennis player, while growing up my favourite aspect of Dad’s Guardian were the full-page Wimbledon draws, which otherwise were only accessible if you attended the event, and the subsequent tournament coverage.
Many of the GW articles have enriched the content of my lectures in my teaching role at Sheffield Hallam University in Food & Consumer Studies.
I like the fact that the GW is light, small and easily fits into a handbag, and it is a regular companion at lunchtimes. My handbag is never without the cut-out crosswords and sudoku and I’m pleased to say I’m now only a few months behind with these.
I do listen to the news bulletins on the radio but enjoy reading the measured articles in GW later. I currently enjoy Oliver Burkeman’s column, Weekly review, Shortcuts and What I’m really thinking.
