Tottenham Hotspur have sacked head coach Jose Mourinho after less than 18 months in charge.
Mourinho was appointed in November 2019 to succeed popular Argentine Mauricio Pochettino and guided Spurs to a UEFA Europa League spot when the challenge seemed unlikely when he took over.
This season, a Premier League title charge appeared to be in the offing during the first half of the campaign when Spurs were brushing shoulders with Liverpool at the top of the table.
Since Christmas, however, Spurs' form has been up and down, winning just seven league games in 2021 so far. As well as their league form dipping, denting their chances of securing a top-four finish this season, the north London club also crashed out of the UEFA Europa League at the last-16 stage, losing to Croatian outfit Dinamo Zagreb.
Spurs won the first-leg 2-0 at the Tottenham Hotspur and looked destined to progress to the quarter-finals, but were stunned in the return-leg in Croatia, losing 3-0.
Although Spurs have experienced no shortage of disappointments in recent weeks, they have reached the final of the Carabao Cup, which takes place this coming Sunday against Manchester City at Wembley.
Now, though, following Friday evening's 2-2 draw with Everton at Goodison Park, chairman Daniel Levy has opted to pull the trigger, bringing Mourinho's time in north London to an end.
A statement released by the club said: "The Club can today announce that Jose Mourinho and his coaching staff Joao Sacramento, Nuno Santos, Carlos Lalin and Giovanni Cerra have been relieved of their duties.
"Chairman, Daniel Levy, said: 'Jose and his coaching staff have been with us through some of our most challenging times as a Club.
'Jose is a true professional who showed enormous resilience during the pandemic. On a personal level I have enjoyed working with him and regret that things have not worked out as we both had envisaged. He will always be welcome here and we should like to thank him and his coaching staff for their contribution.'
"Ryan Mason will take First Team training today and a further update will follow in due course."
As expected, Mourinho's departure has forced Spurs fans to flock to social media in their droves to react to the news.

As you can see from the messages posted on social media above, there is a general feeling of happiness and relief that Spurs have parted ways with the Portuguese boss.
Despite leading Spurs to a major cup final and have them in a strong position in the Premier League table for much of the first half of the campaign, fans were already growing frustrated with his brand of football.
Mourinho has been replaced by former Spurs midfielder Mason, who has taken over the reins until the end of the season.
