Good news for users of play area damaged in arson attack

A children’s play area damaged in an arson attack earlier this year is set to be given a £30,000 refurbishment.

A huge blaze erupted at Springfield Park in Mangotsfield on the evening of April 30.

The fire caused substantial damage to the equipment and flooring and officials were forced to close the area.

The play area, which cost more than £80,000, was also targeted by arsonists in May 2014.

But now the Conservative administration at South Gloucestershire Council has said it will pledge £30,000 to repair the damage caused by the fire and get it reopened for the community.

The authority's cabinet is set to sign off on the money at a meeting on Monday (July 15).

The cash is part of a £200,000 investment by the council into play equipment and facilities across the district.

Rachael Hunt, cabinet member for communities, said: “With summer very much in full swing, our public open spaces are more popular than ever, so for them to have been treated this way by inconsiderate individuals is truly disappointing.

“I am delighted that the council has been able to provide this funding, which will speed up the process in returning the equipment to public use.”

Fellow Emersons Green councillors Colin Hunt and Judy Adams, also welcomed the funding.

Cllr Adams said: “Because the play area at Springfield Park is such a popular area for children and young families in our area, the damage caused by the fire had a considerable impact on the community.

“We have been working towards holding a public meeting to discuss the damage and possible ways forward, which might still happen if there is sufficient interest, but regardless, this announcement will come as a very welcome reprieve to residents who had been concerned about where the money might come from.”

A 14-year-old boy admitted starting the fire at the playground and has since been dealt with, according to Avon and Somerset police.

A spokesperson for the force said: “Due to his previous good character, lack of intent to cause damage and the remorse he has shown, he is being given a community resolution, working with Avon Fire & Rescue's fire education programme.

“This outcome was agreed with the council.

“Three other teenagers questioned over the incident will face no further action.”
