Good news for gym fans as new government rules come into place

For many people, one of the most difficult parts of lockdown has been the closure of gyms.

It may seem like a minor thing to some, but for a lot of us, gyms are a lifeline when it comes to keeping healthy both mentally and physically, and they offer a routine which can feel difficult to match by working out at home.

But after weeks of home workouts, there's finally a glimmer of hope for gym-goers, as new government rules mean that personal trainers are able to offer one-on-one sessions in parks and outdoor spaces in England.

In new lockdown rules which were outlined by the government on Monday, people in England are now able to do the following:

  • spend time outdoors – for example sitting and enjoying the fresh air, picnicking, or sunbathing
  • meet one other person from a different household outdoors - following social distancing guidelines
  • exercise outdoors as often as you wish - following social distancing guidelines
  • use outdoor sports courts or facilities, such as a tennis or basketball court, or golf course – with members of your household, or one other person while staying 2 metres apart

People have also been advised that they can return to work if it is safe to do so and they are not able to work from home.

As a result, personal trainers are now able to train individuals in outdoor areas in England, providing they are able to follow social distancing guidelines and it is safe to do so.

Tara Dillon, CEO for The Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity (CIMSPA), said: "The reopening of gyms and leisure centres is still some way off, but we are pleased that some outdoor personal training can resume.

"This will give some relief to many in our sector who have been impacted by this crisis, and will provide a valuable service to their customers.

"We would urge all personal trainers to ensure they adhere strictly to the government’s social distancing and hygiene guidelines, and keep the safety of themselves and their customers as their number one priority.”

If you are wanting to return to personal training sessions, make sure that you follow social distancing guidelines at all times, and respect the people around you if you are exercising in a public space.
