Additional lane to open on A52 Clifton Bridge

Drivers using the A52 Clifton Bridge will have an easier drive from Thursday morning after Highways England confirmed they are opening an additional westbound lane into Nottingham from 6am.

The opening on October 14 should allow traffic entering Nottingham to travel more freely. The organisation is also encouraging motorists to leave additional time for their journeys on Thursday morning so drivers can familiarise themselves with the road layout.

They aim to reopen the fourth and final eastbound lane (including the second Queens Drive slip road lane) in the coming weeks.

In February last year, engineers had to close the eastbound bridge after they found that the internal structure had become more corroded than previously thought.

As a result, the bridge, which holds up one of the busiest transport routes in the city, has been partially closed for more than a year.

The highways agency had hoped the bridge would be operating at full capacity by February - but a series of investigations uncovered more work was needed.

The closure resulted in huge traffic delays for weeks on end - and, at one point, Nottingham was the most congested city in the world.
