Good Morning Britain weather host Laura Tobin reveals an asteroid will be 'closer than the moon'

An asteroid is set to fly right past the Earth today - but there is no need to be worried.

Good Morning Britain weather presenter Laura Tobin revealed the meteoroid will be closer than the moon is to the earth when it shoots past our planet today.

But that still leaves a considerable breathing space between the earth and the asteroid.

Thankfully.

At its closest point on the flightpath, the asteroid will still be at least 275,000 km away from the earth.

Laura said: "Before I get on to the weather, you may well hear in the news today that an asteroid is heading towards Earth.

"I am here to say don't panic, it's not going to hit us, but boy is it going to get close.

"The meteoroid has got a catchy name, it's called 2021EQ3, and it will pass between us and the moon.

"It will be around 167,000 miles - that's a seventh of the distance between us and the moon.

"Even if it did enter our atmosphere it would burn up, with just a small fragment landing

"So if you hear about that on the news today, don't worry, it is set to fly by."
