Good Morning Britain viewers split as Clap For Carers founder calls for NHS tribute to end

Good Morning Britain viewers have been left split after the founder of Clap For Carers has called for the NHS tribute to end.

As a nation at 8pm every Thursday we have applauded the NHS front line workers and care home staff fighting the coronavirus outbreak.

But now, the tribute's founder, Annemarie Plas, has called for tonight's applause to be the last.

Speaking to GMB hosts Ben Shephard and Ranvir Singh, Annemarie said the tribute has been "overwhelming" but thinks now for her, after 10 weeks, it's a good time to stop.

"For me personally, after 10 weeks it's a good time to stop giving it my support but still maintain its positive impact.

"It's now good for me to see how we can take this positive energy to the next level, which could be an annual moment.

GP and broadcaster Dr Mark Porter also appeared on GMB this morning to discuss whether Clap For Carers should now end.

"I don't want fatigue to set in and don't want people to feel like they have to clap," he told viewers.

"It's been beautiful but I think it has served it's purpose."

However, Annmarie also stressed that those who want to continue clapping for our carers should do so.

"For everybody who wants to continue, I think they should," Annmarie said.

The event originally began as a one-off to support NHS staff on March 56 - three days after the UK went into lockdown.

But it quickly evolved into something much greater and became a universal way of showing our support each week.

Good Morning Britain viewers took to social media to weigh in on whether the weekly Clap For Carers tradition should end.

One fan wrote on Twitter: "I'll still be clapping #gmb "

However, another argued: "I think clapping should stop, not out of disrespect for NHS workers, it doesn’t mean we don’t care. I’m sure they’d rather the public started a petition for better PPE, pay & conditions for them. #GMB."

A third said: "We will still be #ClapforCarers #GMB it’s something we do as a family and units our estate for those 2/3 minutes #NHS #nhssuperheros."

"Yes the Clap For Carers should end. Whilst it started off with the best of intentions it’s become nothing more than a competition between neighbours as to who can make the most noise. #GMB," a fourth added.

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays from 6am on ITV.
