Good Morning Britain viewers left split as new host announced for ITV show replacing Piers Morgan

Good Morning Britain has confirmed Richard Bacon will guest-host the ITV programme following the exit of the controversial Piers Morgan.

The former Blue Peter presenter and host of The Big Breakfast was previously on the breakfast show for a stint two years ago.

Mansfield-born Richard, 45, will be returning to Good Morning Britain from Wednesday, August 18 for four days until Monday, August 23.

He joins the team after the spot was left vacant by Piers Morgan when he stormed off the set earlier this year following a row with weatherman Alex Beresford over Meghan Markle.

Viewers of the hit breakfast show were left with mixed opinions after the announcement on Twitter.

One wrote: "Why oh why?!?!?!"

Another added: "Great. Hopefully a permanent seat being thought of."

"Wish this was a permanent position I’d be back watching," said another.

"Great choice! Nice to have someone with integrity and decency behind your desk."

"Oh god no," said another tweeter.

The programme's editor, Neil Thompson, said: "Our mix of guest hosts on Good Morning Britain alongside our brilliant existing family of presenters has been a great success over recent months, and brings a diverse range of perspectives on the day's news agenda.

"We're delighted that Richard can return to join us this summer."
