Good Morning Britain's Piers Morgan clashes with Dr Hilary on coronavirus 'u-turn'

Good Morning Britain host Piers Morgan was left fuming at Dr Hilary Jones after he denied that the government had made a 'dramatic u-turn' on coronavirus.

The government announced that it was advising people to avoid crowded areas such as offices, pubs and theatres in the latest move to stop the spread of COVID-19.

Over 70s, pregnant women and people with chronic health conditions have also been advised to limit their social contact due to being more 'at risk' from the virus.

Speaking on GMB, Dr Hilary denied that there was a 'huge u-turn' by the government, saying: "I don't think it was a huge u-turn.

"So what they've said is that we continue along the role of mitigation... it is inevitable that there were going to be draconian measures."

Piers argued: "There are a lot of experts saying this is a u-turn, and the government was pursuing the wrong strategy."

"There's a presumption that our science is right," Piers continued. "Have we been playing with lives for the last week and a half by pursuing the wrong path?"

"We have trust in the advisers and think they have done the right thing for this country," Dr Hilary replied.

"There is no right or wrong in this," he continued. "Whatever we do, there's going to be consequences."

The health expert then called the government's latest response to the virus 'intuitive', to which Piers raged: "It's not intuitive, it's common sense."

He continued: "We have been doing some stupid things."

Dr Hilary added: "It's common sense versus science. Do we trust the science, or do we go on our gut feeling?"

"The idea that we have been encouraging 250,000 people to amass together is a dereliction of government duty."

"We have to trust the science. This is not two or three people, this is a number of experts," Dr Hilary added.

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays on ITV at 6am.
