Good Morning Britain's new host Pip Tomson is a former Tyne Tees and Metro Radio presenter

Good Morning Britain's 'new' host Pip Tomson has strong ties to the North East, having been on screen on Tyne Tees for a number of years, as well as being on the airwaves on Metro Radio.

On Friday morning, Pip joined ITV colleagues Kate Garraway, Charlotte Hawkins and Alex Beresford on the final GMB of the week and, like she was known for on Tyne Tees, delivered the news headlines to viewers at home.

Announcing her GMB appearance on Twitter, Pip, 43, wrote: "I’m in the studio tomorrow (FRI). Rousing you from yr (sic) slumber to bring you the news headlines from 6am on @GMB Kate and Charlotte on from 6.30am. Lots to discuss including looming ‘Freedom Day’. Do join us!"

York-born journalist Pip received a warm response from the always very opinionated GMB audience on social media.

Including her in their Twitter post, one fan told her: "...well done on GMB this morning, really engaging.. hope you are on the show more often."

Another tweeted: "What a breath of fresh air you are to the show please come back more often"

A third Twitter user made reference to Pip's days in the North East as they praised her, writing: "So good to see @PipTomson on @GMB I’ve been a fan since your local news days up here in the North East!"

Pip became a co-presenter on Tyne Tees back in 2006, before her role switched to being a weather reporter and fill-in host for Tyne Tees and its Border-based sister show Lookaround in 2009.

She then swapped TV for radio as an occasional co-host of Tony Horne's famous breakfast show on Metro Radio, before moving onto Real Radio.

Former Sunday Sun columnist Pip appeared as a weather presenter on GMTV in 2009, moving onto Daybreak a year later, before returning to the latter, which then became Good Morning Britain.

While she is rarely seen in the studio, Pip is one of GMB's longest serving reporters
