Good Morning Britain's Kate Garraway gives update on husband Derek on air

Kate Garraway has returned to her role as a host of Good Morning Britain following a long absence as she cared for her husband. While on air, the presenter shared an update on her husband's condition revealing that he came down with 'severe life-threatening sepsis.'

In conversation with co-host Richard Madeley, she updated viewers by saying that Derek Draper developed a bad kidney infection which led to sepsis. Kate also added that she was live on air when she was given the news and had to remain professional.

Derek has been struggling with long-term health conditions since he tested positive for Covid-19 in early 2020. Kate has been absent from Good Morning Britain since July 9th which was when doctors phoned to say they were concerned about his health.

She said: "I got a phone call from the person who was looking after him saying, we're really worried. I whizzed home and it just sort of went boom from there. We called an ambulance and went to A&E, where they said he had very severe sepsis, life-threatening sepsis. So it was really dramatic."

She also added that he had had low blood pressure but thankfully was still testing negative for Covid-19. Doctors were unable to get a sample of urine to test for infection but then settled on the kidneys.

She said: "Unfortunately, his kidneys were really badly infected, blocked. The challenge now is to save them. So that's where we've been for the last three weeks. One kidney is looking really good, just need to look at the other one. Still in high dependency."
