Good Morning Britain's Kate Garraway gets unusual welcome as she returns to ITV studio amid hair disaster

Kate Garraway had an unusual welcome as she returned to Good Morning Britain on Thursday.

It is the first time she has been in the ITV studio since before Christmas, however, she did appear for an interview via video link earlier this week.

Kate, 54, appeared on the show on Tuesday (January 4) to discuss the news she had been honoured with an MBE for services to broadcasting, journalism and charity.

While chatting to Susanna Reid and Richard Bacon about her latest news, Kate also gave an update on her husband Derek Drape and spoke about his first 'big trip out' just before Christmas.

Returning to GMB at 6am on Thursday to read the latest news headlines alongside Susanna and Ben Shephard, Kate was applauded by her co-stars and the programme's crew.

"Lady Garraway MBE over there! Congratulations," Susanna, 51, said from further down the desk.

"Thank you very much indeed," Kate replied as the applause rang out.

"How are you doing?’ Susanna then asked her co-star and friend.

"Well, it hasn’t made me any more competent, unfortunately," Kate responded. "I laughed when I shouldn’t have done just then, so sorry."

"You do get to stand up at the bar," Ben 47, commenting, with Kate replying: "Which is wrong. Because you should be standing and I should be reclining on a chaise lounge."

"Like Mariah Carey would," Ben quipped.

Later, Kate revealed that she had suffered a bit of a hair disaster, admitting that she was "a bit bewildered by how ginger [she] had become over the festive period".

She said the hair dying mistake even left her 12-year-old son, Billy, saying that he "didn't think anything could save it".

"What was it? Was it the eggnog?" Ben cheekily asked.

"Home root dye," she replied. "Even Bill said, 'I don't think anything can save this, mum.' But not even solid shampooing after the last few days has calmed it down a tad."

But Susanna responded: "I think it looks lovely!"

"But the problem is, Susanna, that you're so lovely that you would never tell me the truth," Kate joked.

Earlier this week, Kate addressed backlash at the news she was being honoured with an MBE.

"There have been a few comments since it was announced from people saying: 'Why has she got this? I look after my loved one,'" the mum-of-two, who has been helping care from Derek at home since April last year, said.

Kate then pointed out that it "is not for looking after Derek".

"But there's lots of people you feel deserve it more," she added before her co-stars reassured her that she was a deserving recipient.
