Good Morning Britain's Kate Garraway blown away by Susanna Reid's gesture

Good Morning Britain's Kate Garraway has paid tribute to Susanna Reid as the star is set to make a surprise return to the show tomorrow.

Kate was joined on Thursday's edition of the current affairs news programme by Richard Bacon.

The ITV show is currently rotating between a combination of guest hosts and the duo were set to present together for the rest of the week before Richard was joined by Ranvir Singh on anchor duties on Monday.

However, the programme is set for another shake up tomorrow as Richard announced Susanna is returning on Friday's episode to allow Kate to take her children away on holiday.

Kate has been caring for her husband Derek since he fell critically ill with complications from long-Covid - and she expressed her immense gratitude to Susanna for cutting her own summer holiday short so she can fit the much-needed break into her busy schedule.

She said: "I just wanted to say a massive thank you to Susanna because she's been really kind. I had a very tight window where everybody could come and look after Derek so that I could take the kids away."

It will be the first holiday Kate and the family will be on without her husband - and she admitted it will feel strange to be away from Derek's side.

She said: "We are quite emotional the three of us about going away without him.

"It feels strange, but we need to do it to take a bit of time and come back feeling refreshed."

Susanna was initially meant to be away from the show until September, but Kate revealed nobody else was in a position to cover her hosting duties.

Richard said he was glad that Kate was able to take a much needed-holiday and also congratulated his co-host on receiving a National Television Award nomination for Finding Derek.

Kate revealed earlier this week that she was hoping Derek would be well enough to attend the awards - but she has cast doubt on whether this will be possible.

She said: "It would just be a lovely thing for him to experience how much what he has been through has touched people. We're taking everything a day at a time, but I think the logistics might be quite tricky. September might be a bit soon."

*GMB continues at 6am on ITV and ITVHub tomorrow
