Good Morning Britain makes change to show format in special tribute to Prince Philip

Good Morning Britain made a change to the show format on Monday morning it seemed, to pay a special tribute to Prince Philip after his death on Friday.

The sad news was announced on Friday afternoon, after GMB had already aired that day, with the Queen's husband passing away that morning.

Buckingham Palace confirmed the death of the Duke of Edinburgh, aged 99, in a moving statement with the Queen expressing her "deep sorrow".

On Monday, GMB and ITV paid tribute to him after all TV shows including This Morning and Loose Women were taken off air immediately as the news came in.

Susanna Reid and Kate Garraway presented the show as it began at 6am, with Sean Fletcher on hand to announce the latest headlines.

Of course there was talk of the new lockdown changes and coronavirus rules lifting, with many hospitality venues including beer gardens and gyms now allowed to open.

But fans noticed that the show kicked right into things at 6am on the dot, as opposed to 6:30am as normal - taking to Twitter to question why.

Usually the news presenter, Sean on Monday, would host the show from 6am until half past, before the main presenters would appear.

They would then host the show from there, but there was a change on this occasion to pay tribute to the late royal.

Susanna and Kate opened the show themselves, and paid their respects to Prince Philip as they read out tributes from his sons and other family members.

This change hasn't happened since the show did the same thing for coverage of the coronavirus pandemic, more so last year.

Prior to this, it has always started the main show at half past six, and GMB reverted back to this format in January 2021.

It seems this will be a one-off change to the show to cover the main news, with the hosts opening by paying tribute to the late royal before hosting as normal from half past.

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV.
