Good Morning Britain interviews UK family stuck in Mexico and fans all say same thing

Fans of Good Morning Britain were all asking the same question after a UK family stuck in Mexico were interviewed on today's show.

The latest edition of the breakfast news programme was hosted by Ranvir Singh and Sean Fletcher.

The duo spoke to Rebecca Dean - and her son Jack - who were left heartbroken this week when they discovered Mexico was moving to the government's "red list' just as they landed in the country for their "dream" holiday.

Travellers returning to England from a red list country will face huge quarantine costs to stay in a managed hotel - and the family have cut short their £8,000 holiday to return home on a British Airways relief flight on Sunday morning - before the change will take place.

Rebecca is a student nurse and she said the whole family were in disbelief at the decision.

She said: "Me and my husband have all worked really hard for this holiday. There were no rumours to suggest that Mexico could go on to the red list."

"We have had no contact from anybody about what our situation will be when we get back home."

They were joined by travel expert Simon Calder - and Ranvir Singh was shocked to hear that he doesn't know of any insurance policies that cover holidaymakers forced to cut their trips short if the country moves to the red list while they are there.

The 43-year-old presenter said: "If it turns red while you're there, it appears there is no safety net.

"I find it extraordinary that there isn't a government scheme for that."

Ranvir sympathised with the Deans and said he felt the traffic light system is set up to 'encourage' families like theirs to go on holiday in this time - but Good Morning Britain viewers took to Twitter to question the family's decision to book such a trip during a time of continued uncertainty.

One user said: "Zero sympathy for anyone who goes to Mexico during a pandemic and does b***ger all research into the potential consequences"

Another tweeted: "What a shock!!!! Holiday in MEXICO affected by COVID?"

A third added: "Alexa google Mexico and Covid…. Mexico extremely high in Covid cases Etc …. Ok then. Mexico off my travel list. You see? That simple"

A fourth commented: "Don't go abroad then if you're not prepared to do the potential quarantine. Especially with kids. Everyone knows the risks"

And Rachel addressed the people asking this question on the ITV show .

She said: "I completely understand. We've had this holiday booked for over a year and we never expected to be in this situation. We checked pretty much daily since we had it booked.

"We could have gone closer to home but Mexico is our dream holiday. It's somewhere we love going and there was nothing to suggest this could happen."
