Good Morning Britain hosts thrown after MP Jonathan Ashworth cut off mid-comment about Colston

Labour politician Jonathan Ashworth MP was cut off during a live discussion about the Colston statue on Good Morning Britain.

Today's show was presented by Susanna Reid and Ben Shephard and joining them for a discussion on a live video link was the Shadow Secretary of State for Health and Social Care.

Ashworth was invited to talk about the recent coronavirus lockdown changes from Labour’s point of view, but the GMB presenters wanted his thoughts on the removal of the Colston statue as well, the Express reports.

However, before he got the chance to really express his opinion, those watching at home saw him cut off.

Reid said: "We all understand the Edward Colston issue clearly and whatever means it was removed.

"There will be very few who will defend the presence of a slave trader near a harbour where he kept his ships which kept thousands of slaves. It's a hideous heritage."

Ashworth said: "Well, first of all, this statue in Bristol, that should be a decision of the people of Bristol and whether they want to put it in a museum or whatever. That’s for the people of -"

"I said we were going to lose him shortly but we really did lose him! Sadly we’ve lost the signal to John Ashworth there I’m afraid," Shephard replied.

Reid asked: "How did that happen?"

"I think he went down sadly at that moment. We were told we had until five past seven and then the signal runs out!" Shephard joked.

After the statue was dumped in the harbour, Bristol council made efforts to remove it this morning and the relevant authorities say it will be placed in a museum.

The statue has been a controversial fixture in the city for a while, with repeated calls for it to be removed.
