Good Morning Britain host Piers Morgan vows to pay D-Day veteran's TV licence fee

Piers Morgan has promised to pay the TV licence fee of a war veteran following the BBC's decision to scrap free licences for scores of pensioners.

The BBC has announced that over-75s will no longer be automatically eligible for a free licence and only OAPs who claim pension credit will now be exempt from the £154.50 a year charge to watch live colour television.

Bosses argued it was the "best and the fairest outcome" after Government pulled the funding for free licences for the elderly.

The issue was discussed on ITV show Good Morning Britain on Tuesday morning, when callers told the hosts how the decision would affect them.

Carole Monk, daughter of veteran Thomas Cuthbert, was among those who rang in.

After hearing from her, Morgan said: "You can tell him from me Carole, I will pay his TV licence for as long as he needs one.

"Because honestly, it's making me so angry, this. So you tell him not to worry about it. Whatever happens, he moved us so much yesterday on this show, I'm not having him paying for a TV licence.

"So you can take it from me, I will pay for his licence."

He further added: "There are a million veterans who now have to pay for a TV licence. Many of them just can't afford it. How has it come to this?"

Co-host Susanna Reid said it was an "outrage".

Speaking to another caller, who was upset about the decision, Susanna said: "It's an outrage that someone like you, with everything that you already face and all your responsibilities, is reduced to tears this morning because of this decision.

"It's absolutely shocking, my heart absolutely breaks for you."

In a message to the BBC, the caller Josephine Iron, whose husband has dementia and is in a care home, said: "Get into the real world and listen to the people like us out here.

"Stop penalising elderly people, because that's what you are doing."

Susanna added: "Good luck Josephine. We send you all of our love and support. We are going to keep the pressure up."
