Good Morning Britain doctor reveals simple trick to help tackle face mask side effects

Good Morning Britain's Dr Sarah Jarvis has revealed why a number of people have reported difficulty to breathe when wearing face masks.

Face coverings are already compulsory on public transport in England, and the Government has made it mandatory to wear them in shops and supermarkets from July 24 to reduce the spread of coronavirus.

But some people have reported feeling breathless when wearing a mask.

Dr Jarvis, standing in for Dr Hilary Jones during his summer break, appeared on Wednesday morning's instalment of the popular ITV1 show opposite Ben Shephard and Ranvir Singh to reassure viewers - as shown in the video above.

"If you have, say, COPD, which means your oxygen levels tend to be lower anyway," Dr Sarah said.

"Most of us run at oxygen saturation levels - about 88 or 89 per cent.

"If you have COPD, your level may be 95 per cent. That means whenever you have something which exerts you, you will feel short of breath.

"If you have something on your face, you may very well feel anxious about it."

She added: "The good news is that we know it does not have that effect so what we can now do is to perhaps encourage people to put them on at home.

"If you are out and you have to get to a shop and you are feeling anxious, you will naturally feel out of breath. The reason for this is because you are overbreathing - have more adrenalin and adrenalin naturally makes you want to breathe more, it makes you feel breathless."

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays from 6am on ITV1.
