Good Morning Britain cast get emotional as they praise Kate Garroway and husband Derek

The Good Morning Britain team were emotional this morning as they discussed the harrowing Kate Garraway documentary, Finding Derek, which aired last night on ITV.

The documentary showed Kate and Derek's journey together since he caught Covid-19 last March, through being rushed to hospital, losing eight stone in weight and suffering kidney failure, holes in his lungs, a stopped heart and a damaged liver and pancreas. He remains in intensive care.

This morning, Kate's fellow GMB presenters heaped praise on her and her family for telling their story. Ben Shepherd said: "It's an incredibly brave thing to do, for Kate to share this story. It's such a personal story."

Ranvir Singh said: "In his heart, just being a family man, and Kate said [it]: the children were so resilient because he'd filled them up with so much love for this awful moment that they didn't know was around the corner." Singh also said she found the documentary clips she'd seen in advance hard to watch, and that she would watch the full thing on the ITV Hub, rather than live on the night, because she thought she would struggle to sleep after watching it.

Susanna Reid said: "Watching the documentary, she is so together. When you think she's juggling all of those jobs, and also having to talk to medics all the time about her husband, and the way that she, and the children, involved Derek in family life via FaceTime. She makes time for all of it."

Dr Hilary Jones, meanwhile, lauded the way Kate had supervised Derek's medical care. "She's researched tirelessly," he said, "about what's best for Derek. Should he be having this treatment, what about that, what about this?"

Susanna Reid summed it up by saying: "He burst with pride about Kate. He is so proud of her. And he would be so proud of her doing this."

Kate Garraway: Finding Derek is available to watch now on the ITV Hub. She'll be back on Good Morning Britain tomorrow (Thursday).
