Good Morning Britain cancelled as covid fears grow

ITV's early morning show Good Morning Britain has been pulled off the air between Christmas and New Year amid coronavirus fears.

The news comes after GMB presenter Sean Fletcher tested positive for Covid-19 on Sunday (December 19).

Reports suggest TV bosses have made decision to cancel the show following concerns among staff and other presenters.

The ECHO understands a pre-recorded Christmas Day special instalment of the show will still go ahead.

The decision has been taken to "protect" the show's teams amid the rise of the Omicron Covid variant across the UK.

On Monday, Lorraine - hosted by Andi Peters - was broadcast from the same studio as Good Morning Britain to reduce the number of staff and crew needed to run both shows.

ITV has not confirmed what programme will replace GMB in the daily schedules.

A spokeswoman said: "GMB was due to be on air from Wednesday 29 (to) Friday December 31 2021 but due to the pandemic and to protect our teams, we have decided to give them an extended break.

"GMB will not broadcast next week, but will be back on air on Tuesday January 4 2022."

Following the departure of Piers Morgan in March, GMB currently features a rotating cast of presenters including Susanna Reid, Ben Shephard, Ranvir Singh, Charlotte Hawkins and Kate Garraway.
