Good Friday drinking laws Ireland: Rules around buying alcohol and pints in pubs, shops and off-licences

It's bizarre to think that it's only been three years since we changed the prohibition on selling alcohol on Good Friday.

In 2018, pubs and shops could sell and offer alcoholic drinks for the first time on a Good Friday since 1927.

Despite nowhere being fully open because of you know what, it is still possible to get drink on Good Friday.

Restaurants and gastropubs are continuing to serve takeaway pints and bottles of wine to customers purchasing food but cannot sell alcohol until 10:30am on Good Friday.

But if you just want a drink without food, pubs are still offering takeaway pints, cocktails or whatever tickles your fancy, all this weekend including Good Friday with the sale of alcohol also starting at the same time.

The Citizens Information website states: "Alcohol can only be sold on a licensed premises during set hours.

"For off-licences (including supermarkets), alcohol can be sold at these hours:

"Monday to Saturday from 10:30am to 10:00pm

"Sunday and St Patrick’s Day from 12:30pm to 10:00 pm."

This means that off-licenses in supermarkets must too adhere to these rules over the Easter weekend and including Good Friday.

You can find supermarket and off-licence opening hours for the whole of Easter here.

While these options are still available to people, Gardai have continued to urge the public to stay at home unless they absolutely have to move.

Deputy Commissioner, Policing and Security, Anne Marie McMahon said: "An Garda Síochána is acutely aware the impact of Covid-19 is having on the communities that we live in. Public Health regulations are in place for the protection of the most vulnerable in our society.

"I appeal to everyone to make that extra effort this Easter weekend to comply with the Regulations, which remain in place. Your actions this weekend could protect a loved family member or dear friend.

"We are here to help and support our communities and the most vulnerable citizens. If you know of someone or suspect someone needs support during this time, please contact your local Garda station."
