The Good Food Guide, now more than 75 years old, has today announced its inaugural ‘restaurant month’ in a bid to spotlight some of Britain’s “most exciting places to eat”, while offering diners good value in a typically frugal month.
The guide will host a nationwide campaign from January 13 “showcasing the breadth and diversity of restaurants” from neighbourhood gems to game-changing fine dining establishments.
More than 350 restaurants are taking part in the new initiative, with each venue running a special set menu or offer to encourage diners through the door in what is traditionally a quiet period for hospitality.
Big names in London include Angela Hartnett’s Cafe Murano; Arlington, Jeremy King’s restaurant in Mayfair; and Sessions Arts Club in Clerkenwell. All will be serving two- or three-course menus for under £30. The River Cafe’s three-course set will be £65.
Guide owner Adam Hyman said he wants to champion the hospitality industry during the quieter months and get customers at tables.
“January is a notoriously tough time for hospitality,” he said. “I’ve always thought it is one of the best times to treat yourself to a meal out and a glass or two of something delicious.
“The aim of restaurant month is to encourage the British public to venture out for a meal at the beginning of year and perhaps try a place that they may not have eaten at or treat themselves to a special meal somewhere that may have been out of their budget.”
Another restaurant in London doing a deal is Soho favourite Rita’s, whose owner Missy Flynn said: “Restaurant month is a nice opportunity to come together collectively with other restaurants and embrace the slower start of the year.”
