'Good enough' - Newcastle United manager claim made about Gareth Southgate

England manager Gareth Southgate is 'good enough' to lead a club like Newcastle United or Leeds United.

That is the view of talkSPORT pundit Trevor Sinclair, who believes the Three Lions boss would prove to be a 'good fit' at St James' Park under the new owners.

Steve Bruce remains in charge but speculation continues to swirl around the Magpies' head coach's long-term future.

Brendan Rodgers, Frank Lampard and Lucien Favre are among the candidates being linked to the post, with the Saudi-backed consortium expected to make a change sooner rather than later.

Southgate has enjoyed an impressive stint in international management, guiding England to a World Cup semi-final in 2018 before losing the Euro 2020 final to Italy on penalties.

However, the 51-year-old's experience in club football is limited to a three-year spell in charge of Middlesbrough where he was dismissed in 2009 following relegation to the Championship.

Southgate is not expected to leave his current position anytime soon, but Sinclair believes he could be tempted by the job at Newcastle or Leeds in the future.

He told talkSPORT: "I think with where he lives in Harrogate and where that is situated domestically, I would say something like Leeds or Newcastle. I think he's good enough for that.

"You look at his record, he's got the second best win ratio as any England manager. The top is [Fabio] Capello on 66%, he's got 64%.

"He's been to two semi-finals, one final, he's a great leader of men. He's great with the media, I think he's good at working with young players.

"They are all the pros. Cons, he's not won anything and tactically at times he's been questioned."

When asked by presenter Jim White whether the Magpies should consider hiring Southgate now, Sinclair replied: "I'm not saying they should look at him but I think it would be a good suit.

"But possibly not now, he's going to go to the World Cup, he possibly could go to the next Euros. In the future, it could be something they could look at."
