Sometimes simple things are the best. A food stall that cooks omelettes may not seem all that exciting. And eating at a street stall may not seem all that fancy. But a new movie about one particular food stall will transport you to a world of friendship.

Nai Khai Jiao, Siao Torpedo (Mr. Omelette) is a heart-warming comedy drama from director Pariphan Wacharanon. The film looks at the simple yet profound friendship of five very different people, as well as their love affair with the speciality served at their favourite food stall. Among the impressive cast are two of Thailand’s most popular singers — pop legend Singto Numchok and morlam star Kong Huayrai.

Before the film opens in cinemas on October 5, S Weekly caught up with Singto and Kong to talk all about Mr. Omelette.

Can you tell us about your characters?

Kong: I play Mali, the owner of a street food cart that sells all kinds of egg dishes. His omelettes are the best. He’s a genuinely nice and sincere person but is quite poor.

Singto: I play a successful guy named Prince. He works as a university professor, has a beautiful girlfriend and drives a sports car. He’s funny and smart. But late at night he always ends up drunk at Mali’s stall.

Is Mali’s stall a place where people come to hang out?

Singto: At the beginning of the film, it is. People from different backgrounds and professions come together and share their stories. But soon, Mali’s friends notice that he has the talent to do much more. So they work together to find a way to enter him into an international cooking contest.

Did you enjoy playing these characters?

Singto: Yes, it was a cool experience. Prince is very different to me, so it was fun to be somebody else. They put me in suave suits that I’d never normally wear.

Kong: This was my first big screen movie, so everything was very new and exciting. I grew up in a small town in Sakon Nakhon. I went to see movies at an outdoor cinema when I was a kid. I never dreamed that one day I’d have the opportunity to be in a movie myself.

Kong, how did you prepare for the role?

Kong: It was quite a lot of hard work, actually. I had to learn the correct cookery skills and tricks to make it look realistic. I went through weeks of training. Some tricks, like cracking an egg using only one hand took a few hours to master while others, like flipping the omelette in the pan in perfect rhythm, took weeks.

Did you have fun working together?

Kong: It was amazing to work with Singto. I’ve been a fan of his music for a long time, but we didn’t know each other before this movie. Once we started filming, we became good friends right away. It’s weird — I feel like we’ve been friends for years.

Singto: That’s true. In the movie, Prince is one of Mali’s closest friends. The chemistry between us on set was just right. Maybe the fact that we’re both from Issan made it easier to get along.

Which was the hardest scene to do?

Kong: The scene where we go wakeboarding on a lake was very hard. It’s tough learning a new sport. You fall on your face a lot. One moment you’re riding along fine, hollering to your mates. The next, you’re drinking lake water. I had a sore back for weeks.

Singto: Yeah, that was crazy. At first, I thought I’d be fine, because I’ve been surfing before. But wakeboarding is totally different. You don’t feel like you’re in control. It’s easy to be thrown into the water.
