Goo Hara death: K-pop star found dead at home in Seoul aged 28

A former member of South Korea's top K-pop girl group has been found dead at her home in Seoul, police say.

Goo Hara, 28, known as Hara in other parts of Asia, is best known as being part of the K-Pop group Kara, which she joined in 2008.

The actress and singer, who spoke out against cyber bullying, had also appeared on television and released music by herself.

Police say the cause of death is still under investigation.

Goo appeared at a series of comeback performances in Japan last week after being hospitalised in May when she was reportedly found unconscious at her home.

The singer later apologised for causing "concerns and a commotion" among her fans over the incident.

She said it was difficult to overcome depression and pleaded for positive comment on social media.

Goo was found dead about 6pm local time (9am GMT) on Sunday in her home, the Gangnam Police Department was quoted by Yonhap news agency as saying.

Her latest post on Instagram, shared with her 1.5m followers on Saturday, was a photograph of herself in bed with the caption: "Good night".

Tributes have flooded in to the star.

K-pop correspondent Tamar Herman said: "She was one of the most prominent female K-pop stars of a generation, & she did things on her own terms and ws vilified for it. She deserved so much better."

The BBC’s Seoul correspondent Laura Bicker wrote on Twitter: “The South Korean celebrity Goo Ha-ra, a former member of popular K-pop girl group Kara has been found dead at her home. We are awaiting more details. So sad.”

Her death comes just over a month since another former K-Pop girl band member, Sulli, was also found dead in a suspected suicide .
