'Gone way too young': Teenager who died in reservoir named as tributes left at the scene

A teenage boy who died while swimming in a reservoir has been named.

Peter Obi, 17, is thought to have drowned at Elton reservoir in Bury on Friday afternoon.

His body was recovered from the water later that evening.

Rochdale Coroners' Court confirmed a file relating to the death had been passed to the coroner.

An inquest will be opened at a later date.

On Tuesday morning several bunches of flowers could be seen on the reservoir wall.

A tribute attached to one read: 'To Peter AKA Stormzy. I actually can't believe you've gone? Gone way too young. It was credit to know you. You're a king. Stay blessed up there."

Another read: "Rest in peace PJ. Gone but never forgotten."

Police and fire crews were called to the reservoir, at about 2.10pm on Friday following reports a teenager had gone missing while swimming.

Witnesses reported seeing divers searching the water.

In a Facebook post on Friday night, GMP Bury North confirmed a body had been recovered.

It said: "Sadly, police responding to reports of concern for a male in Elton Reservoir this afternoon have recovered a body from the water.

"Formal identification has yet to take place, but the body is believed to be that of a 17-year-old boy and his family has been informed.

"There aren't believed to be any suspicious circumstances.

"Our thoughts are with his loved ones, and we ask that their privacy is respected as they grieve at this awful time."
