July 15--REPORTING FROM MEXICO CITY -- In his last 90 seconds as a prisoner, Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman paced his tiny cell, repeatedly entered a shower out of view of surveillance cameras, returned to his bed, changed his shoes, headed into the shower one last time -- and vanished.
He was gone in less than a minute.
Mexican authorities have released surveillance video from Guzman's maximum-security cell that shows his movements leading up to his escape.
Dressed in prison garb, he appears calm and methodical. He is fully clothed each time he enters the shower, and he appears to have a full head of jet black hair, in contrast to the official photograph released of him with a shaved head.
The footage begins at 8:50 p.m. on Saturday night. He is last seen when he kneels behind the wall of his shower, at 8:52 p.m.
Guzman's pacing was "the daily, natural behavior of an inmate who spends long hours in his cell," Mexican security commissioner Monte Alejandro Rubido said in offering a voiceover of the video.
Movements, he added, that led to the "extraordinary action" of lowering himself through a hole in the base of the shower, down a 30-foot chute and into a mile-long tunnel to freedom. Using a small motorcycle inside the tunnel which was also equipped with lighting and ventilation, the flight could have taken a matter of minutes.
The cell contains two beds and on one, there appears to be an illuminated i-Pad or other type of electronic screen.
Rubido said a "red alert" was sounded as soon as prison officials realized Guzman was gone, but he did not say how long that took after the notorious head of the Sinaloa drug cartel actually disappeared.
