'Gone but never forgotten'... tribute to young dad found in prison cell as inquest opens

A young father was found dead in his prison cell, an inquest has heard.

Dylan Reece Woodhead, who played rugby for Wigan-based club Ince Rose Bridge, had been serving time at HMP Hindley.

Police coroner's officer Neil McCaffrey told Bolton Coroner's Court that the 22-year-old joiner was found hanged in his cell on the morning of January 8.

Mr McCaffrey said: "On the 8th January 2021, a prison officer carrying out a welfare check found Dylan unresponsive, suspended from a ligature in his cell.

"Although CPR was attempted by staff and attending paramedics, resuscitation was not possible."

Mr Woodhead was pronounced dead at 8.21am.

Senior Coroner for Manchester West, Timothy Brennand told the court that the provisional cause of death has been recorded as "hanging".

Mr McCaffrey confirmed that a police investigation into Mr Woodhead's death is ongoing, pending a report by the Prisons & Probation Ombudsman.

He added that there "doesn't appear to be any suspicious circumstances".

Mr Brennand asked for statements to be prepared by Mr Woodhead's GP, the investigating officer and the ombudsman.

He adjourned the hearing for a pre-inquest review on June 25.

Paying tribute to Mr Woodhead, a spokesman for Ince Rose Bridge Rugby Club said: "It was of great sadness to hear of the tragic passing of Dylan.

"Dylan was a fierce competitor that would always be one of the lads at the forefront of our pack but he also had lovely ball handling skills for a big lad and would be one of the players I would ask to help change a game.

"Off the field, Dylan was a massive part of our team - a great bunch of lads that were a pleasure to coach.

"I've got some great memories of coaching Dylan over the years but also knowing him and his family on a personal level. They are memories I'll always hold tight.

"I'd like to pass on my deepest condolences to Dylan's mum Kelly, dad Dave, sisters Cierè and Jess, his daughter Willow and all his family from myself and all at Ince Rose Bridge.

"God bless you Dylan, gone but never forgotten."
