Goncalo Ramos profiled amid £25million links to Newcastle United

Newcastle United have not hidden their desire to bolster their attacking options this summer and Goncalo Ramos is the latest upcoming talent to be linked with a move to St. James' Park. The Magpies are reportedly set to bid in the region of £25million for the Benfica striker, who scored against Eddie Howe's side in the Eusebio Cup in pre-season.

That game was effectively an audition for the youngster, who has seemingly impressed the Magpies hierarchy with his performances. Ramos would certainly fit the profile Newcastle are looking for this summer, after also being linked with Hugo Ekitike and Benjamin Sesko.

It's clear they're looking for some longevity from their next striker, with all three of the aforementioned talents under the age of 21. Ramos is the oldest of the trio but what do we know about the striker?

The Portuguese forward spent time with Olhanese and Loule before being snapped up by the Eagles in 2013 at just 12-years-old. He has an impressive goalscoring record in Os Encarnados youth sides, which saw him make his Benfica B debut in 2019.

Ramos has scored 16 goals in 37 games across three seasons for the B Team, before making his first team debut in a 2-0 win over Spartak Moscow in the third qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League in 2021. The arrival of Roman Yaremchuk and Darwin Núñez's from injury meant he was pushed down the pecking order and was linked with a move away from the club in the most recent January transfer window.

However, Jesus' departure saw Nélson Veríssimo appointed as interim manger in January 2022. Verissimo had previously coached Ramos in the B team and he was given an opportunity to impress - which he grabbed with both hands - scoring seven goals and proving two assists.

Ramos' versatility across thee front three mad him difficult to drop and has been an ever present since - scoring 11 goals in 35 appearances in total. The 21-year-old has been capped by his country at youth level and has a stellar record for his country.

The most impressive of those statistics coming for Portugal U21's where he's scored 14 times in 18 appearances. He was part of the Portugal side that finished runners-up in the 2021 UEFA European Under-21 Championship, losing in the final 1–0 to Germany.
