Goncalo Cardoso's first words after completing "dream" €3m transfer to West Ham

New West Ham signing Goncalo Cardoso has said moving to West Ham is a "dream come true" after completing his move to east London from Boavista in Portugal.

The Hammers have signed the teenager defender on a five-year contract from Boavista for a fee believed to be in the region of €3m to become Manuel Pellegrini's fifth new recruit of the summer.

Cardoso follows goalkeepers Roberto and David Martin, midfielder Pablo Fornals and striker Sebastien Haller to east London ahead of the 2019/20 Premier League season, which gets underway this weekend when the Hammers face two-time defending champions Manchester City in E20.

"I am very excited and it's a dream come true," the teenager told the Hammers official website.

"I always dreamt of coming to England and now I’m here at this big, historic club, so I’m very happy.

"I’m an aggressive player, a little bit different on the pitch than off it. I’m calm, and I like to have the ball and build the game from the back.

"I’m here to work and to help the team reach their goals."

West Ham have paid €3m to sign the Portugal U19 skipper, plus a further €2m in potential add-ons based on Premier League appearances and has penned a five-year contract in the capital.

The youngster is set to train with his teammates for the first time on Wednesday at Rush Green with the first team and not follow the path of previous Portuguese youngsters Domingos Quina, Xande Silva and Mesaque Dju who immediately joined up with the U23s at Chadwell Heath.
