Golfers of infamous Oireachtas Golf Society set to hit the fairways again this summer

Golfers of the infamous Oireachtas Golf Society are set to hit the fairways again this summer.

A secret meeting of Oireachtas Golf Society committee members was held in a small room of the LH2000 building of the Leinster House complex on Tuesday evening to hammer out the arrangements for this year’s golf outings.

The Irish Mirror can confirm that the society’s stalwart organiser, former Fianna Fáil Senator, Donie Cassidy, was there with all the details, along with the former Captain of the Guard in Leinster House, John Flaherty, and another leading golf society member, Labour former leader, Dick Spring.

The Captain’s Prize will be held over two days in Killarney Golf and Fishing Country Club in August.

It was decided that the traditional Captain’s Prize will be back this year after missing a year last year because of Covid and public outcry over the previous year’s event.

The country’s most notorious golf society has been in abeyance since the events of August 2020 when a gathering of 80 golfers and diners led to the Golfgate scandal.

It was alleged that they had broken Covid lockdown rules during the evening’s prizegiving after the golf day.

However, all charges were dropped in Galway District Court against accused organisers earlier this year.

Golfers around Leinster House have been approached on Tuesday and Wednesday asking them if they are ready to attend the event.

The Mirror has talked to several members who have been invited and all were cool on turning up for this year’s renewal.

One society committee member told the Mirror: “the trophy will be easily enough won this year because there won’t be many turning up.”
