Golfers lead Ayrshire ladies to national title for first time in almost 50 years

Two Irvine golfers helped Ayrshire win the Scottish Women’s County Championship for the first time in almost half a century last weekend.

Luisa Gibson and Pauline Patrick, both members of Irvine Golf Club, were part of the nine-strong ladies team who went through the competition at Peebles unbeaten.

Ayrshire won all of their three matches, beating Fife 7-2, Perth and Kinross 6-3 and clinching the title for the first time since 1970 with a 7-2 victory against Dumfriesshire.

Luisa claimed two points out of two in the final match while Pauline contributed to the success by picking up points in the previous two matches.

Kilwinning’s Connie Jaffrey, a former Scottish champion, also played a major part, winning all six of her ties over the weekend.
