Golfer jailed for club attack on fellow player

James Alexander Collins will spend at least 15 months in jail.

A Launceston golfer has been sentenced to two and a half years in prison after hitting a fellow player in the head with a golf club.

The attack happened outside a hotel after the pair had spent the day drinking during a golf trip.

Jamie Alexander Collins, 23, was found guilty in the Supreme Court in Launceston last week of causing grievous bodily harm.

Collins hit Christian Mark Whiteman with a golf club outside the Park Hotel in Invermay in November 2015.

Mr Whiteman underwent emergency surgery and spent 11 days in intensive care on life support.

He suffered a depressed skull fracture and was left with a permanent brain injury.

Justice Michael Brett told the court he accepted Collins had acted defensively towards Mr Whiteman.

"He was making threats to harm you ... he was significantly larger than you," he said.

However, he said, his actions "were clearly disproportionate to the threat he faced".

Both of the men had been drinking throughout the day.

Collins will be eligible for parole after serving half of his sentence.
