Even as he fought back tears on the day of the funeral procession for the late King Bhumibol, Kiradech Aphibarnrat carded one of his greatest rounds at the WGC-HSBC Champions in Shanghai on Thursday.

The 28-year-old scored seven birdies in a row for a seven-under-par 65 at the 325 million-baht event. He was in joint second position with Malaysia's Gavin Green on Thursday afternoon, one shot behind US Open Champion Brooks Koepka.

Mr Kiradech, dressed in black like millions of other Thais mourning the late Rama IX, was quoted as saying "It's not a good day, we are remembering our king who passed away nearly one year ago.

"It's very upsetting in our country,"  said the three-time European Tour winner. “But the show must go on, and I need to keep doing my job, and hopefully I will take the trophy home for our King.”
