Golf-gate judge Seamus Woulfe finally meets with Chief Justice Frank Clarke after four postponements

Golf-gate judge Seamus Woulfe has met with the Chief Justice to discuss his attendance at an Oireachtas Golf Society dinner in August.

Mr Justice Woulfe was appointed to the Supreme Court in July but has yet to sit on the bench due to the ongoing controversy over his attendance at the event in Galway.

Public anger over the dinner, attended by more than 80 people at a hotel in Clifden, saw both the Minister for Agriculture Dara Calleary and European commissioner Phil Hogan resign.

The meeting between Mr Justice Woulfe and Justice Frank Clarke took place at the Four Courts this evening.

Four previous meetings had been postponed at the request of Mr Justice Woulfe, three of them on medical grounds, RTE reports.

Mr Justice Woulfe has previously issued a statement apologising “unreservedly” for his attendance at the bash.

A review by former Chief Justice Susan Denham said Mr Justice Woulfe had not broken any law or knowingly breached any public health regulations by attending the dinner.

It also found it would be “unjust and disproportionate” for the judge to resign.

A statement on Thursday's meeting is expected next week.
