Golf-gate attendee Seamus Woulfe faces fresh call to resign as Supreme Court judge from Shane Ross

Supreme Court judge Seamus Woulfe has faced fresh calls to resign from a former government Minister.

Shane Ross, the former Minister for Transport and Sport, said Mr Justice Woulfe “behaved in a way that a judge should not” and insisted he should resign.

It comes after the Supreme Court has asked former Chief Justice Susan Denham to review whether Mr Justice Woulfe should have attended the controversial golf event in Clifden, Co Galway.

Mr Ross said: “I think it’s probably indicative of the elitism and situation of judges in this country hasn’t changed and he’s still there and a large number of politicians have resigned their offices at this stage.

“It’s quite difficult to call for his resignation... but we’ve got a system here that is deeply flawed and we’ve seen that in the last few days.

“I’m trying to be as modest as possible in this situation where a very serious offence has been committed.”

Mr Ross, who lost his seat in the last election, said the former Attorney General is probably holding on despite calls for him to resign as “judges feel they cannot be removed” and “have a feeling that they are some sort of elite who are untouchable.”

He told RTE Today with Claire Byrne that questions need to be asked about Mr Justice Woulfe’s attendance at the Oireachtas golf event in Clifden when he is not a member of the Oireachtas.

Former Chief Justice Susan Denham has been asked and has agreed to begin work immediately to consider whether Mr Justice Woulfe should have attended the event which has led to a flurry of resignations within Leinster House.

The Supreme Court judge issued a statement last week and said he attended the dinner on the understanding that it would be adhering to public health guidelines.

He apologised for any “unintentional breach of any of the new guidelines on my part.”
