Golf clubs in Republic of Ireland to close under new Covid restrictions

Golf clubs in the Republic of Ireland are set to close during the new six-week lockdown.

It has been announced that all golf courses in the south will shut under Level 5.

The Golfing Union of Ireland and Irish Ladies Golf Union confirmed the move on Wednesday.

In a statement, they said: "Following intensive engagement over the past 48 hours we have been informed by Sport Ireland that, very regrettably golf clubs must close under the new level 5 restrictions.

"Essential course maintenance is permitted to continue under level 5. We have sought clarity on the issue as to whether ranges/practice facilities an remain open or exempted acivities.

"We will update clubs on this as soon as possible."

Golf clubs in the Republic of Ireland escaped the first lockdown in the south, resulting in a surge in membership reported all over the country.

Northern Ireland introduced new Covid restrictions last Friday, with Golf clubs remaining open under strict guidelines.

The GUI and Irish Ladies Golf Union reminded clubs and players to comply with all rules and regulations surrounding Covid-19 following the NI Executive announcement.

In a joint statement, the GUI and ILGU said it was "essential that all golf clubs operate within this guidance".
