A man is in a critical condition in the Royal Adelaide Hospital after the attack.

A golf club and a sledgehammer have been used as weapons in a fight that has left an Adelaide man with life-threatening head injuries.

Police were called to the altercation, on Underdown Road at Elizabeth South, about 12.30pm.

A 49-year-old Elizabeth South man was left with serious head injuries and taken to the Royal Adelaide Hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery and remains in a critical condition.

The other man — a 46-year-old also from Elizabeth South — was arrested and charged with aggravated causing serious harm.

He has been refused police bail and will appear in the Elizabeth Magistrates Court on Wednesday.

Police said the men are known to each other.
