Golf and tennis clubs re-open in London as coronavirus lockdown restrictions ease

Golf and tennis resumed in London on Wednesday, albeit at an amateur level, as the Government’s easing of restrictions began at clubs across the capital.

At Queen's Club – host of the annual Fever Tree Championships, where Andy Murray made his return from hip surgery last summer – members were invited to return for “outdoor tennis only” from 10.30am BST.

But members were informed that “no other facilities on site will be available”.

Other clubs such as Dulwich Lawn Tennis Club delayed reopening for 24 hours until Thursday, but reiterated the Government guidelines that only members of the same household can play doubles, while individuals from separate households can play singles but “must maintain two metres social distancing at all times”.

It also stipulated one-to-one coaching would resume.

Meanwhile, golf clubs across London and the surrounding counties reopened with immediate effect on Wednesday morning.

Royal Wimbledon Golf Club, the third oldest club in England dating back to 1865, confirmed that members had returned to playing.

And Hendon Golf Club said it too had reopened, but to members only.

A statement on the club’s website read: “We apologise that we cannot yet open the course to visitors. As soon as the situation changes we will let you know.”
